Whether you have approached this cache from the North or the South makes no difference - Just imagine - Go back 100 years in your mind... If you reached GZ by wagon and mules you probably had to stop a few times and scotch the wagon and let the mules "blow". Or maybe you came by "T" Model. Before beginning your accent, you would have had to tie a steel bar to the rear axle of your car to keep you from rolling backwards. The steel bar would dig into the dirt road and stop you. The brakes on those old vehicles weren't much in reverse. Oh, yea and in case you missed it - the road was dust in the summer and mud in the winter. The dirt road behind the cache will take you through some of the prettiest parts of the Ouachita Mountains.
Blowout Mountain is located between Pencil Bluff and Y-City on Hwy 270 West of Mt. Ida, in Montgomery County. The mountain summit climbs to 1,690 feet above sea level and houses acres and acres of Forest Service land.
The land on Blowout Mountain was once owned by the Caddo River Lumber Company until it was nearly entirely clear cut and was then sold to the U. S. Forest Service for $1.25 per acre on June 1 1934 after year long negations. The Caddo River Lumber Company still held rights to cut old growth timber. Finality of the transaction came in 1936.
