If you use the Falknerweg from Tirolo you can go to the Earthcache and to the castle almost plain also with a stroller.
In South Tyrol are a lot of places where you can find earth pyramides. At Terenten and Plata, Renon (Earthcache GC1TV95), Collepietra (in the area throughout the Catinaccio-Latemar), San Genesio, Meltina, Rifiano, Caines and also at Tirolo.
We want to place the earthcache here at Tirolo, because in the neighbourhood is a lot to see.
There is castle Tirolo, the Brunnenburg (both museums) and the Falknerpromenade where you have a wonderful panoramic view.
The nicest way to the earth pyramides starts at Tirolo. You can park there and you have to follow the signs to the “Falknerpromenade” and “Castel Tirolo”. On the walk you can see a lot of information signs, where you can read about the history of the castles.
Earth Pyramids (also called "Earth Pillars") are steep and cone-shaped or tower-shaped erosion forms. There are rock blocks at the top, so they can remain in time. Pyramids can be found mainly in Europe, (rarely in Africa or America) similar are the Hoodoos in Colorado.
Formation
The pyramids at Tirolo are cone shaped erosion forms of moraine debris, that are thick at the bottom and smaller in height. At top they have a protective capstone.
The formation of the earth pyramides depends from the climate and the type of moraine debris.Fundamental is the hillside situation, so that the rain water can flow fast down.
Another important fact is the inclusion of big stones, they can become capstones.
So the big stones can protect the sediment under it from the rain water.
If the capstone falls down, the pyramid went destructed by the rain water.
