The SBLC has decided to introduce geocaching at two of their
preserves as part of their education and outreach efforts. It is
hoped that the activity will inspire more recreational use of the
preserves and help increase awareness of SBLC’s conservation
efforts.
The Event will begin at 10am with a geocaching 101
class.. So any experienced cachers who would like to take a
newbie or two around would be appreciated. Also anyone who can
bring an extra GPSr for the newbies to try.
We’ll have several temporary caches placed around the
preserve for everyone to find during the event. And a permanent
cache has been placed at Sand Point and one at the preserve in
Pinconning. (The permanent cache at each preserve was placed
jointly by Windrose and SBLC personnel.) These won’t be published
until after the event but the cache pages will be handed out at the
end of the event to any interested cachers who want to find
them.
This is a nature preserve so there are no bathroom
facilities, tables, etc.
We will have a couple of coolers with water, juice, pop,
etc.
There will be a small prize table (some geocoins, ready
to place caches, etc.). Any donations to the prize table would be
greatly appreciated. We’ll have a drawing right after the 101
class.
=======================================
A little about The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy. The SBLC helps
to preserve land and water quality across the Saginaw Basin. They
work to maintain the quality of life in the Saginaw Bay Watershed
through the preservation of important wetlands, waterways and land
of all types. The SBLC owns 7 preserves throughout the Saginaw Bay
Watershed.
Many of the lands they focus on are home to wetlands, which
provide many benefits, including preservation of water quality,
reducing sediment entering rivers and the bay, provide a barrier to
erosion along shorelines, help with flood protection, and provide
the beginning of the food chain.
