Geocache Description:

This geocache is placed with permission of Great Parks of Hamilton County Permit 140319-05 .

Participants must stay on designated trails until they get close to the designated area and follow all park rules.

Glaciers moved through Hamilton County more than 10,000 years ago. These glaciers acted like giant bulldozers, pushing rocks and debris into this area from further north. As the glaciers pushed these rocks this way, the rocks becamse sanded and smoothed down, giving them the rounded shape we see now. Once the ice melted, the running water helped cut the gorge you are standing in (Sharon Woods Gorge) and the smooth, rounded rocks were left behind. These rocks are known as glacial erratics - glacial because they were brought by these rivers of ice; erratic because they were dropped anywhere, making their locations somewhat unpredictable.

You can see several of these from the gorge trail. To better understand the power of these glaciers let's estimate the weight of the erratic at the posted coordinates. Estimate it's size (in feet) and we'll assume the density of it is the average for sandstone (155 lbs/cubic foot). Email me your estimate size of this erratic and its estimated weight. And post a picture of yourself next to the erratic boulder.
