Geocache Description:

This cache is placed at a memorable spot along the Mt Mitchell
Challenge race course.

The Mt Mitchell Challenge is a 40-mile ultra marathon that begins at dawn in the cold of winter in Black Mountain and follows icy trails to the 6,684' summit of Mount Mitchell - eastern America's highest point - then returns to Black Mountain's Lake Tomahawk. With a starting altitude of 2,360', the elevation gain for this 40-mile run is 4,324' - in the first 20 miles. You can read more about this race at (visit link)

The flat area near this cache, ~mile 37, tricks runners coming down the steep, rocky trail above you into thinking that their legs will get a break from the steep downhill. However, what awaits them below this cache area is the infamous Appalachian Way, a very steep, paved road that pounds the quads so bad that some racers, including yours truly, walk or run the road backwards to avoid additional quad pounding.

The cache is a plastic cylinder located near the parking area.
