Geocache Description:

This cache is placed at a memorable spot along the Mt Mitchell Challenge race course.

The Mt Mitchell Challenge is a 40-mile ultra marathon that begins at dawn in the cold of winter in Black Mountain and follows icy trails to the 6,684' summit of Mount Mitchell - eastern America's highest point - then returns to Black Mountain's Lake Tomahawk. With a starting altitude of 2,360', the elevation gain for this 40-mile run is 4,324' - in the first 20 miles. You can read more about this race at (visit link)

The trail upon which this cache is located is reached by runners after climbing up the very steep, and oftentimes, very icy Lookout Road. Very few runners actually run up the entire road leading to this trail without taking a walk break, even though it is only ~3 miles into the 40 mile course. This relatively flat trail allows us to catch our breath before ascending further up toward the Toll Rd trail.

A gravel parking area is located on the right side of Lookout Road. From there, a short walk will take you to the cache location. The cache is a pill tube located on the uphill side of the trail.
