Geocache Description:

This is an urban micro cache at one of the most historic buildings in the City of Gilroy, Old Gilroy City Hall. I have wanted to put a cache here for years and decided now is the time. I will improve this cache page as time progresses with more history and pictures of this lovely old building.

The corner stone for Old Gilroy City Hall was laid in place in November of 1905. It is still in place for you to admire today. The architect for this building was Frank Delos Wolfe, and is the only building he designed still standing. Although originally considered a Mission Revival design, the locals affectionately refer to it as “Flemish Baroque.” The building housed the city hall and the police station of Gilroy for over 50 years. The Police Station was housed on the bottom floor and the door to the jail can still be seen in the rear. The building was restored by the Gilroy Historical Society in 1968 and a bronze marker placed by the Native Daughters of the Golden West marks that event. The building was added to the National Registry of Historical Places in the United States by the Department of the Interior in 1975. After the earthquake of 1989 the building was again restored and brought up to present day earthquake standards. The building has housed several restaurants over the years and will hopefully be around for many more years for future generations to enjoy.
