OzarksJim's Cinema Cache Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

OzarksJim: As I indicated earlier in the week, I planned on archiving this cache and replacing it with a new (and better) one. It has now been archived.

The new one will hopefully be published sometime today.

Those who took the time to solve the original puzzle the way it was intended will have a head start on the second cache (assuming you kept your notes).

Geocache Description:

Next to geocaching, my favorite hobby is watching movies. This cache combines both of those obsessions.

***The cache is not at the posted coordinates! Don't bother looking there!***

Park at N 37° 20.242 W 093° 28.676.

To find this cache, you will need to do some preliminary research. There are 11 images listed below. Each of these images are of a location where an American movie (and sometimes more than one movie) was filmed. All of the images were captured using Google Earth. You may or may not need the Google Earth software to solve this mystery puzzle cache, but I will say it would definitely make it easier if you used it (see alert below).

Some of the images are of overhead views, some were taken with the "Google Street View", and some were taken of the 3D building models that I think are really cool in Google Earth. Some of the images have GPS coordinates in them to help you, and some do not. Regarding those that do not have GPS coordinates, well then you'll have to do a little more research on those, but most of them are images of famous U.S. landmarks.

Here's what you'll have to do with each picture to get the final coordinates...

  1. Determine what movie is associated with the image. Remember that the image is a location where one or more scenes from a particular movie (and in some cases, more than one movie) was filmed.
  2. Once you think you know the movie, determine the YEAR the film was released. To avoid confusion, use the Internet Movie Database to get the year of the film (that's what I used).
  3. Determine the AVERAGE year of the 12 movies used for this cache.
  4. Follow the instructions to get the coordinates for A, B, etc.
Note that some filming locations had more than one movie filmed there. The films I chose were ones I thought would be most recognizable. Also, in the case of movies that had sequels, use only the FIRST movie.

To assist you in your quest, I'd like to add that all of the movies were filmed in the United States and no movies used here are older than the 1950's. Also, Movies #1 through #11 are in alphabetical order.

I have personally visited some of these locations. I've been to the small town where Movie #1 was filmed. During a business trip a couple years ago, I did a mini-tour of some of the spots where Movie #3 was filmed (including the location in the image). I've been to the spot where Movie #5 was filmed a couple times. I stayed in the house right next to where Movie #9 was filmed, and I've ridden by the spot for Movie #12 in a tour bus.

The cache is a small plastic container wrapped in camouflage tape, and contains only a logbook. Bring your own writing utensil.

The cache is located right off of the Frisco Highline Trail, so please be aware of jogging/biking muggles. The trail is open during daylight hours only. Also, please replace the cache exactly as you found it. It should be completely hidden from view and covered with "natural objects".

I will not be providing additional hints until the FTF is claimed.

I hope you have as much fun with this cache as I did putting it together.

Take the average release date and...

  • subtract 1982 to get A.
  • subtract 1985 to get B.
  • subtract 1977 to get C.
  • subtract 1978 to get D.
  • subtract 1980 to get E.
The final cache is located at N 37° 20.ABC W 093° 28.DED.

Good luck!
