Geocache Description:

You’re looking for a small Pelican style container just big enough to hold a smart phone. Please bring a pen to sign the log.

I came to the area again to do cache maintenance on the other caches. Today the noise from the planes was really loud. It seems the planes never stop here. The noise today was making my bones shake as they passed overhead. I can see why the people moved away.

While I was here I decided to hide another cache to help fill out the area. As I looked for a good spot I noticed that it was starting to get very quiet as it got dark. I didn’t think much of it because I was paying more attention to what I was doing than listening to the planes flying overhead.

Off in the distance I thought I heard a group of small children playing hide and seek. I looked in the direction of the sound trying to see the children. Nothing. I figured they were far enough away, and went back to my task of hiding the new cache. It was getting harder to see what I was doing in the growing darkness and I had left my head lamp in the car.

The sound of the children seemed to be getting louder as it got darker. I knew sound carried more at night and passed it off as the sound drifting on the wind. I looked toward the sound, but I was still not able to see the children. They sounded very close. And the really odd thing is I didn‘t hear any planes.

I was almost finished placing the container. I turned to pick up the log bag from the ground to place it in the container. I was surprised to see one of the children, a young boy with blond hair wearing an old baseball cap, crouched down hiding from view of his friends that were trying to find him. He looked to be about eight years old. I said hello to him. Nothing. Maybe he didn’t here me? He must of heard me. He’s only two feet away. Again I said hello. Still nothing. I walked in front of him and bent over and looked at his face. I was right in front of him and it seemed as if he was looking right thru me. All the time the only sound he’s making is a soft giggling sound as he laughs at his friends that can’t seem to find him. Man oh man, this is really weird.

I looked in the direction of the sound his friends were making as they ran around searching for him. For a brief moment I could swear I saw five or six children running between houses, garages and around parked cars. That doesn’t make any sense, there’s nothing left here but an empty field. The houses and people have been gone for years. All the while the young boy is still crouched down and laughing softly.

Across the field one of the children called out “olly olly oxen free“. Next thing I know, the young boy stands up and starts to run toward his friends. Then he stops, looks directly at me and straight into my eyes. As he looked at me I felt as if he was looking into my soul. He smiled at me and said “My name is Bobby, what’s yours?“ I told him my name and he said “Thank you for helping hide me from my friends.” He turned back and ran toward his friends. As he went he looked back over his shoulder and waved good-bye. As I watched him go I started thinking that all this was just a little odd. As he ran across the field he seemed to vanish. I ran toward the area where he and his friends had been playing and there was nothing. I strained to see them, again nothing.

As the sound of the planes returned I realized that I had been here for two hours. I headed back to the car in the dark trying to make sense of it all. I passed it off as the night air playing tricks on my mind. When I reached the car I had an odd feeling. I turned and looked back toward where the children had been playing, and I thought I heard the sound of children laughing again.

Then in the distance I heard “ole ole oxen free.”

Happy hunting!
