This cache is hidden on an island worth visiting "Ilha do Mel". You'll have to get there by boat (transfers available). Best reacheable at lower tides. Some hiking will be necessary.
When I was visiting the Ilha, I looked for geocaches there and was surprised to see there wasn't any. So I decided to leave the first one there, for you to have some fun besides the beauties of the island.
The "Ilha do Mel" or "Honey Island" is a great place to visit if you are touring in the south of Brazil. It's ideal for a whole day trip or even staying longer as there are lot of hostels and camping possibilities.
To get there you can take the transfer from "Pontal do Sul" 25° 34.117'S 48° 21.563'W, or from Paranaguá. The time I placed the cache it cost aprox. $10,00 for the round trip. The crossing takes about 20 minutes and generally the boats live every hour. ATTENTION: The last trip from the island back to Pontal leaves normally at 5:00 pm, and you'll need between 1 to 2 hours to find the cache and return to the harbor.
There are 2 destinations on the island for the crossing boats. The one nearer to the cache is "Encantadas". You will have a walking distance of less than 1km till you reach it.
The walking paths are well signaled. Take the path to "Gruta das Encantadas" and follow it till stage 1. When you reach it, look for a wooden log just near the sign.
Position yourself at this place and look in the distance (1,48km to be precise) for a cross at a bearing of approximately 60 degrees (true North). If it's foggy and you can't find the cross, look in the hint for the final coordinates.
Now imagine a line between you and the cross and exactly where this line reaches one of the next hills there is the beak of a rock pointing west. There is the place where you shall look for the container. This is at 250m air-line distance from where you are. Youl will have to climb (hike) a little bit to get there, and watch out for thorns,. You won't have to leave the small path on the hill.
The container is a white cylinder of good size (about 30cm high and 10cm in diameter). Please make sure you hide it back protected from the rain as it's not waterproof, and hidden behind some natural stuff (like rocks and leaves) as this place will be full of muggles during the surf season.
Please note that it might be difficult to reach the cache in some hours of very high tides. I tried to make sure it is in a place you can reach regardless of the tide, but I couldn’t be 100% sure.
I hope you have fun looking for this cache and take some time to explore other parts of the island. In my opinion the best beach is "praia do farol" or "Lighthouse beach", but everyone has a different opinion ;-)
