A small cache at park on shore of Arcadia Lake.
A former center of the northern Michigan lumber and furniture trade, Arcadia is the hometown of the first American aviatrix, Harriet Quimby (although she reportedly refused to admit it) and Arcadia Lake, formerly known as Bar Lake due to the fact that it is separated from Lake Michigan by a large sandbar.
This cache will bring you to the former site of the Starke Land and Lumber Company sawmill and, after it burned in 1906, the Arcadia Furniture Company. In its heyday in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Arcadia Lake harbor was host to over 500 large vessels a year, mostly carrying lumber and passengers. Lack of funding caused the harbor to deteriorate, however, and commerce slowed along with the shipping traffic. By the middle of the twentieth century, the furniture factory and the harbor were closed.
Arcadia Lake has since seen a revival and this cache will bring you to a small park that will allow you a great view of the lake and perhaps some of the fishing boats that now use the marina.
Parking is close. This is a log-only cache, so bring your own pen.
