Nebraska City established the 24-acre Riverview Park on the pre-industrial bank of the Missouri River in 1934.
It instantly became a popular picinc and boat racing spot, but America's Great Depression began its transformation. The federal government ordered the river channelized in 1939, moving the river eastward and reconnecting a river island with the Nebraska shoreline. The former island is now a popular marina called the Riverview State Recreation Area.
The Great Depression also prompted the federal government to sponsor the National Youth Association, which built the stone bridge and staircase near the traditional riverbank. The Works Progress Administration also built a stone staircase, a monument to Nebraska pioneers and an array of weirs and flood control structures.
Riverview Park has a new 1.5 mile wood chip trail, scouts meadow and a group bonfire pit, The parks restoration continues under the guidance of the Riverview Trailblazers.
The park is open year round. HOWEVER, the road is closed to vehicle traffic during the Winter (November 1 through April 1) Traffic flows from 6th Street through the park and exits below on 5th Street. The winter walk increases the difficulty rating. Use the blue trail to approach the cache area. The area is full of wild life including deer, turkey, mosquitoes and ticks.
While visiting Nebraska City take some time to visit the many tourist sights and activities.
