Princess Louisa Inlet: Trapper's Cabin Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Doz and Ron: This cache seems to have gone missing and I won't be going out this way any time soon. Too bad, it was a great spot for a cache! I encourage someone else to put a cache out at Trapper's Cabin.

Geocache Description:

A somewhat difficult hike to a wonderful spot above Princess Louisa Inlet

The hike to the Trapper’s Cabin is a wonderful uphill trek through coastal forest to the remains of an old cabin, a magnificent waterfall, and splendid view of Princess Louisa Inlet, all the way to Malibu Rapids.
According to the BC Parks website information on Princess Louisa Marine Park, “Outside the park is a nearby hiking trail to Trappers Cabin that takes approximately 2 hours and is somewhat dangerous and difficult”. The two hours refers to one way, and it takes the same amount of time, going up or going down!
The trail is marked all the way with flagging tape. The trailhead is by the outhouses in Princess Louisa Marine Park. I would not recommend doing this hike if the ground is wet. We did it wearing running shoes, and without hiking poles, but the ground was quite dry. Make sure you keep the pieces of flagging tape in sight; we almost lost our way a few times.
I have rated the terrain as a 5, as the Inlet itself can only be reached by boat, and passage into the inlet requires navigating Malibu Rapids at the appropriate time of day. The hike itself would probably rate about a 4. The cache itself should be easy to find, even without a GPS, just use the hint. (GPS readings are inconsistent in the inlet, with high rock walls all around. My GPS accuracy was to 9 metres when I took a reading at the cache.) The cache contains only a logbook and pencil, although it is big enough to hold several coins or flat travel bugs.
Although Princess Louisa Inlet takes a long time to get to, it is a popular destination. We met other parties on the hike, so I would think people are hiking the trail daily, in good weather.
