De Suiker Unie is een Nederlands bedrijf dat is ontstaan door de fusie van verschillende suikerfabrieken. De eerste fusie kwam in 1947 tot stand en de oudste suikerfabriek is in 1899 opgericht.
Veel suikerproducten in Nederland worden geproduceerd door de Suiker Unie, waaronder de suikerklontjes van Van Gilse. Suiker Unie richt zich tegenwoordig niet alleen meer op suiker; ook zaden en fruit worden door hen geteeld. In de laatste jaren zijn veel fabrieken gesloten; zo sloot in 1996 de fabriek in Roosendaal en in 2004 de fabriek in Puttershoek.
De fabriek in Groningen, waar deze cache bij ligt, is nu gesloten. In januari 2008 werd besloten de fabriek per direct te sluiten, omdat het europese quotum voor bietsuiker was verlaagd met 33%. Voordat de fabriek sloot werkten er nog 98 werknemers. De fabriek even verderop in Hoogkerk draait nog wel gewoon.
Op het moment zijn er nog geen plannen voor het terrein van de suikerfabriek. Er is gesuggereerd er een sportterrein van te maken, maar het is ook mogelijk dat het voor woningbouw wordt gebruikt. Op dit moment heeft de Gemeente Groningen bezit van het land.

The Suiker Unie (Sugar Union) is a company in the Netherlands that was created by the fusion of several sugar factories. The first fusion was in 1947 and the oldest sugar factory was founded in 1899.
Many sugar products in the Netherlands are produced by the Sugar Union among which the sugar cubes from Van Gilse.
The Sugar Union no longer exclusively deals with sugar but is also involved in the growing of seeds and fruit.In the last years many sugar factories were closed. In 1996 a factory in Roosendaal was closed and in 2004 the factory in Puttershoek also closed.
The factory in Groningen is now also closed. In January 2008 the decision was made to close the factory immediately after the European quota for beet sugar was lowered by 33%. Before the factory closed 98 people were employed by the factory in Groningen. The factory in Hoogkerk (about 2.5 km to the west) is still operational.
Currently there is no new destination for the Sugar Union plot. Suggestions of a sports area or housing has been made. The land is currently owned by the municipality Groningen.
