Couch Cemetery is accessed from a driveway at 629 Union Street
in Marshfield. The parking spot will hold 3 cars. The
main trail is wide enough for vehicles, but is gated at the parking
lot.
The forest is a mix of hardwoods and tall pine. As you
approach the riverbanks, the forest clears into a perfect grove of
widely spaced pine trees. The beach is an eroded sand dune on
one of the river's many meanders.
The North River is tidal for about 8 miles inland, and is
bordered predominately by wide flood plains of marsh grass.
There are few places where the dry land comes right to the
riverbank, and fewer still that doesn't result in a steep mud bank,
but this is a rare exception.
Continuing the walk south along the river brings you to another
smaller trail that returns to a different part of the cemetery.
An older (2002) cache,
A Stones Throw from Blue, can be found along the way.
Down at de Seine ve'd take our swim,
But oft ve'd shtand upon dine brim,
Shaking for dread in efry limb
Of turtles huge unt bull-frogs grim,
Unt vater-shnakes so long and slim,
Unt horn-pouts fierce in fighting trim.
At last v'ed brave dine vaters dim,
Unt o'er dine surface boldly skim,
Nort Riffer.
