This cache is located in the Tararua Forest Park, Waiohine Gorge.
Turn off State Highway 2 just south of Carterton into Dalefield Road. Follow the road signs indicating Tararua Forest Park. The road-end car park is approximately 15 km from State Highway 2, the last 6.5km is on a windy shingle road. Parts of this road are one way but there are plenty of places to pass cars coming the other way. You need to drive slowly and carefully, watching out for the oncoming traffic. There a few fords to cross, in heavy rain it is unadvisable to cross.
The Cache is a short walk from the road end. You have to cross the swingbridge that spans the Waiohine River. Head toward Totara Flats and walk for approx 50 minutes. This is a typical Tararua tramping track can be muddy in places. The cache is at the camping area just before Clem Creek. Clem Creek is the first major creek you come across. It has a fearful reputation, as it rises extremely fast during heavy rain and has caught many a tramper unawares, resulting in a number of fatalities.
GPS coverage may be patchy due to the forest canopy. A suggestion is to go to the confluence of Clem Creek and the Waiohine River to get coverage then back track to the camping area, then find the cache.
The weather in Tararua Forest Park can change quickly.
• Warm, waterproof clothing, food and drink should be carried, even on short walks.
• Sturdy shoes or walking boots should be worn on tramping tracks.
