Geocache Description:

MaryJane was reading up about the history of St.John's one evening at work and came across a bit of information about some explorers who may have named the city. There is a possibility that Gaspar Corte-Real, a portuguese explorer, may have named the city as it's referenced in an early portuguese map as Rio de San Johem. It's believed that upon visiting St.John's harbour, they saw Waterford River (much larger than it is present day) empty into the harbour and henced named the harbour "St. John's River". He also named the headland to the North "Capo de Sa Francisco" and the headland that we call Cape Spear - "Capo de Espera".
