Una cache sulle pendici del Monte Serra, in un punto altamente panoramico, vicino ad un monumento che ricorda (purtroppo) una tragedia accaduta una trentina di anni fa.
A cache on Monte Serra, in a great scenic point, near to a monument that remember (unfortunately) a tragedy of 30 years ago.

Giovedì 3 marzo 1977 alle ore 15.05 decollava dall'aeroporto San Giusto di Pisa l'Hercules C-130 "Vega 10" con a bordo 38 allievi della 1° Classe del Corso Normale dell'Accademia Navale di Livorno per un volo di ambientamento. Con loro l'Ufficiale accompagnatore Emilio Attramini e i 5 membri dell'equipaggio. Per cause ancora sconosciute, dopo pochi minuti dal decollo l'aereo si schiantava contro la propaggine montuosa Prato a Ceragiola, sulle pendici del Monte Serra, che divide Pisa da Lucca. Non c'erano superstiti. I 38 allievi avevano un'età compresa tra i 19 e i 20 anni.
I funerali solenni avvennero il 5 marzo nel piazzale dell'Accademia Navale, alla presenza del Capo dello Stato Giovanni Leone, e a cui parteciparono circa 20.000 persone.
Alla fine del 1977 fu presa la decisione di erigere un monumento sul luogo della tragedia, ed il 3 Marzo 1979 fu possibile inaugurare l'opera.
Il progettista, architetto Salghetti Drioli, ha voluto dare significato al manufatto rappresentando due grandi ali in cemento armato che, strisciando sul terreno, oltrepassano il crinale della montagna. All'interno di queste due ali simboliche viene racchiusa una piccola cappella sormontata da un faro. Una pensilina sostenuta da due grandi ancore precede la porta che introduce alla cappella con alla parete destra 4 lapidi marmoree con i quarantaquattro nomi e
il grado sormontate da una scritta in bronzo: "UNA SORS CONIUNXIT".
All'interno della cappella fu inumata, assieme ad una pergamena con le fotografie dei caduti, un'urna contenente resti non identificati delle vittime. Sulla parete di sinistra si trova un bronzeo crocifisso inserito in un contorno di raggi che lo circondano (Cristo raggiato) opera e dono dello scultore Dicolbertaldo. La parete di fondo è costituita da un'unica grande vetrata che si affaccia sulla Valle di Montemagno (quella da cui proveniva l'aereo) e sulla pianura dell'Arno.
Sul fronte della pensilina accoppiati ci sono gli stemmi della 46° Brigata Aerea e dell'Accademia Navale, sopra a forma di torretta un faro rotante costruito dall'Arsenale di La Spezia. Non si tratta di un faro marino ma il suo cono di luce raggiunge una distanza di circa 15 miglia. Nelle notti limpide, lo si vede bene sia dal treno sia dalla strada nel tratto tra Livorno e Pisa: 3 lampi da 3 secondi, intervallati da 9 secondi.
Si accede al monumento tramite una strada in salita con un'ampia curva finale di circa 250 metri che conduce ad un piazzale di sosta; da qui parte una gradinata di 38 ampi gradoni (tanti quanti erano i cadetti) accoppiati a due a due che conduce al "FARO".

Al tempo avevamo solo 10 anni, ma ricordiamo bene l'impatto emotivo che questo evento ebbe su tutti noi della zona: ancora oggi, dopo tanti anni, ci avviciniamo con rispetto a questo luogo. Il posto, comunque, è bellissimo, con una vista incredibile su Pisa e la valle dell'Arno: nei giorni limpidi si vede fino a Livorno, e alle isole.
Per raggiungere il faro potete parcheggiare a N 43°44,114 E 10°32,984 dopodichè salite lungo la strada in cemento sulla destra.
Questo è anche il punto di partenza per un'altra nostra cache, La Croce, potete approfittarne se volete fare una bella passeggiata nel bosco.
La cache è nascosta nei pressi del Faro. E' un contenitore in plastica avvolto in una busta.

Thursday 03 March 1977 at 15.05 took off from San Giusto airport in Pisa the Hercules C-130 "Vega 10" with 38 cadets from 1°Class of Normal Course of Naval Academy of Livorno, for a training flight. With us the Official Emilio Attramini and 5 crew members. For unknown reasons, after few minutes from take-off, the airplane crashed at Prato a Ceragiola, on the side of Monte Serra. There was no survivors. The 38 cadets was aged from 19 to 20 years.
The funerals were made at 5 March, in the square of the Naval Academy, at the presence of President Giovanni Leone, and with the partecipation of 20.000 persons.
At the end of 1977 was decided to make a monument on the place of the tragedy, and the 3 March 1979 it was finished.
The architect Salghetti Droli has projected the monument like two big wings in reinforced concrete that arrives over the side of the mountain. Between these wings there is a small chapel with a beacon on the top. A roof sustained by two big anchors introduce to the chapel door; here, at tre right wall, there are 4 memorial tablet with the 44 names and grades of the deads, with the sign "UNA SORS CONIUNXIT".
Into the chapel was placed a scroll with the photos of the deads, and an urn with some unidentified rests of the victims. On the left wall there is a bronze crucifix rounded of rays, made by the sculptor Dicolbertaldo. The front wall is a big window that shows Montemagno Valley (from where the plane arrived) and the Arno valley.
On the roof there are the crests 46°Aero Brigade and Naval Academy, on the top a rotating beacon made by Navy Arsenal of La Spezia. Its cone of light can reach a distance of 15 miles, and can be seen from Livorno and Pisa: 3 flashes of 3 second, with a pause of 9 seconds.
You can reach the monument through a slope street that ends in a square: from here start a staircase of 38 large steps (the seme number of the cadets) that bring to the beacon.

At the time of the crash we have 10 years, but we remember well the impact of this tragedy for we all living near here: and now, after so many years, we continue to have maximum respect when visit this place. However, this is a very nice place, vith an incredible view on Pisa and the Arno valley: in clean days you can see Livorno, and the islands.
To reach the beacon you can park at N 43°44,114 E 10°32,984, and go climb the street on the left.
This is the staring point for another cache hidden by us, LA CROCE, if you like a good walk in the wood you can proceed.
The cache is hidden in the nearest of the beacon. It's a plastic container in a nylon bag.
