Site Info
Spring Valley School, Spring Valley Road, 1907-57. This one-room school house, now a community center, has aged gracefully with many characteristic features in place including some of the original glass in its wall of windows. The building was raised above its foundations in the 1930s by the efforts of the WPA, creating a basement and permanently closing one of the two entrance doors. They probably once opened into a "cloakroom" at the rear of the high ceilinged classroom near the rope which hung from the bell in the tower. A pot-bellied stove sat near the center of the room and in the front was a stage where children performed. The school closed a few years after West Salem schools were incorporated into the Salem School District. The preservation of this historical building is a credit to the families of this community and a monument to the generations who were educated here

Note: Building is Wheelchair accessible. Unfortunately bathroom is not. Our apologies.

Be sure to be there!
