Wharparilla Reserve

Sept '10...Considering the condition of the roads to the east of this cache, please DO NOT APPROACH FROM THE TOWNSHIP SIDE OF THIS CACHE. It's only a short(ish) stroll from a roadside stop very close to GC1XKY5


Imagine, if you will, a hot day in March 2006.
Vicfire receives a 000 call from a passing motorist...
"There's a fire in the bush just near Echuca."





Within seconds the pager on my hip starts its demanding beeping.
The message...

MurrayValley Highway/Wharparilla Drive/Warren St.


From my office I hear the fire siren start its urgent wail, telling the whole town that the brigade is heading out the door to yet another fire call.

Little did we know that this would turn out to be the largest grass and scrub fire in the district for many years. More than 60 firefighters and 12 firefighting appliances will spend many hours controlling and extinguishing the fire.

Initially we tackled a ferocious fire covering just over half the drought affected swamp land. Two days later we were called back to some flare-ups.
After some discussion about the risk of such dry fuels and the risk they pose to surrounding homes and the nearby township, the decision was made to burn out the remainder of the combungi swamp. Guess who got the job of controlling the backburning operation. Yes, me!

This cache is in commemoration of that fire.

As you walk to GZ, take note of the regrowth. Even though we've had very little rain the combungi has already partially regrown and again poses a significant risk. A strong westerly will blow another fire into the thick bushland that extends from this swamp right through to the built up areas of town.

You are searching for a small sistema container initially containing just a log book and a FTF prize. BYO Pen.
