KEITH HARING
Keith Haring (1958-1990) è stato un pittore, writer e attivista sociale statunitense, tra i massimi interpreti della pop-art e dei graffiti metropolitani.
Fin da piccolo mostrò una predilezione per il disegno incoraggiata dal padre, disegnatore di fumetti e cartoni animati. I personaggi dei fumetti, soprattutto di Walt Disney e di Dr. Seuss, esercitarono su di lui un'influenza duratura. Fu proprio in questo periodo, infatti, che Haring decise di fare dell'arte stilizzata la sua ragione di vita. Al termine del liceo, Keith si iscrisse all'Ivy School of Professional Arts di Pittsburgh, una scuola per artisti-designer commerciali. Ben presto però si rese conto che quella non era la sua strada e lasciò. Tuttavia continuò a studiare e lavorare da solo e nel 1978 organizzò una personale all'Arts and Crafts Center di Pittsburgh. Nello stesso anno si trasferì a New York, iniziando a frequentare la School of Visual Arts e conosce Kenny Scharf e Jean-Michel Basquiat. Lì incontrò una florida cultura artistica alternativa, che non si esprimeva negli spazi artistici convenzionali, bensì nelle metropolitane, nelle strade, nei club underground.
Mentre lavorava il suo interesse personale lo avvicinò ai lavori di Jean Dubuffet, Stuart Davis, Jackson Pollock, Paul Klee e Mark Tobey. Iniziò a realizzare graffiti, principalmente nelle stazioni della metropolitana. Soprattutto i giovani apprezzavano la sua pop-art, al punto che alcuni suoi lavori vennero rubati dalla loro collocazione originaria e venduti a musei. Tra il 1980 ed il 1989 raggiunse la popolarità internazionale, ed il suo stile caratteristico divenne il simbolo della cultura di strada della New York degli anni '80. I suoi disegni si distinguono per una semplicità ed essenzialità grafica, che li rende immediatamente percepibili a tutto il pubblico. Haring sembra sfruttare un linguaggio arcaico dove il segno grafico si fonde con quello verbale, diventando come una sequenza di ideogrammi: "i miei disegni non vogliono imitare la vita, cercando di crearla... ciò si avvicina di più ad una idea primitiva... non uso le linee ed i colori in senso realistico".
TUTTOMONDO
L'idea di realizzare un murales a Pisa nacque in modo casuale nel 1988, a seguito dell'incontro per strada a New York tra Haring ed un giovane studente pisano, Piergiorgio Castellani. Quando nel giugno dell'anno seguente l'artista venne a Pisa, individuò come parete adatta quella del convento di Sant'Antonio. Il Superiore, frate Luciano (personaggio fuori dal comune pure lui!), per nulla indispettito dalla richiesta del giovane artista omosessuale dichiarato e recentemente scopertosi sieropositivo, diede l'assenso.
Il tema scelto fu quello dell'armonia e della pace nel mondo, visibile attraverso i collegamenti e gli incastri tra le trenta figure che, come in un puzzle, popolano i 180 metri quadri del murale. Ogni personaggio racchiude in sè un diverso aspetto del mondo in pace: le forbici umanizzate rappresentano la collaborazione concreta tra gli uomini per sconfiggere il serpente, cioè il male, che stava già mangiando la testa della figura accanto, la donna con in braccio il bambino rimanda all'idea della maternità, i due uomini che sorreggono il delfino al rapporto con la natura. Haring sceglie colori meno vivaci del solito, con l'obiettivo di armonizzarsi con le tonalità dei palazzi pisani e della città nel suo complesso. Tuttomondo è infatti l'unica opera di Haring che viene concepita sin dall'inizio come permanente, non effimera e destinata a scomparire nell'uso o nella serialità della comunicazione di massa. La settimana in cui fu dipinto fu uno spettacolo nello spettacolo, cui parteciparono pisani curiosi, giovani entusiasti, religiosi che trovavano in quell’arte uno sguardo verso il Cielo. Tuttomondo è anche l'ultima opera pubblica di Haring: l'artista si spense otto mesi dopo, il 16 febbraio 1990, a soli 31 anni, in seguito alle complicanze dell'AIDS.
L'esperienza a Pisa è rimasta assai impressa nei ricordi di Haring. Quasi come un commiato definitivo, nel suo diario scrive: «Guardo la cima del campanile, è davvero molto bello qui. Se esiste il Paradiso spero che assomigli a questi luoghi».
RICERCA CACHE
E' una multicache per due motivi: farvi ammirare con attenzione Tuttomondo e ridurre un po' il rischio muggler che stazionano numerosi a tutte le ore. E' una micro che contiene solo il logbook: ricordatevi di portare una penna!
Per trovare la cache dovete ricavare un po' di valori da Tuttomondo. Nel murales è dipinto un numero di due cifre:
A = prima cifra di tale numero
B = seconda cifra di tale numero
Accanto al numero vi è un segno algebrico racchiuso da un cerchio: se tale segno è +, allora C=9, se tale segno è -, allora C=8.
Ora un po' di conti:
D = numero di occhi nel murales
E = numero di personaggi con le ali nel murales
F = numero di teste di animali acquatici nel murales

Keith Haring (1958-1990) was an American artist and social activist, among the greatest masters of pop-art and graffiti.
Since early age he was fascinated by drawings and cartoons thanks to his father. Disney and Dr. Seuss deeply influenced him. In this period he realized that stylized arts would have been the theme of his life. After graduation he spent two semesters at Ivy School of Professional Arts of Pittsburgh, but soon abandoned to follow his own inspiration. He continued to study and work alone, as testified by his solo exhibition at Arts and Crafts Center of Pittsburgh in 1978. In the same year he moved to New York to attend the School of Visual Arts, where he got acquainted with Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat. There he met a flourishing alternative artistic community, which preferred unconventional cultural spaces, such as subways, roads, clubs.
During his activity, his interest grew toward the works by di Jean Dubuffet, Stuart Davis, Jackson Pollock, Paul Klee, Mark Tobey. He started to realize graffiti especially in metro stations. Especially young people appreciated his works, such that some of them were stolen and then re-sold to museums. Between 1980 and 1989 he reached wide international recognition, and his peculiar style symbolized New York street culture of the eighties. His drawings are characterized by simplicity and graphic essentiality, which make them immediately discernable to everyone. Haring seems to exploit an archaic language where the graphic sign merges with verbal sign, becoming like a sequence of ideograms: "my drawings do not want to imitate life, trying to create it... this resembles more a primordial idea... I do not use lines and colors in a realistic way".
TUTTOMONDO
The idea of realizing a mural in Pisa was born in 1988 thanks to an accidental meeting in New York between Haring and a young student from Pisa, Piergiorgio Castellani. When in June of the following year the artist came to Pisa, he identified as a suitable wall the one of Saint Antony Convent. Father Superior Luciano (another great man, really!) agreed with pleasure, not at all irritated by the request of the young artist, who was openly homosexual and recently discovered to be seropositive.
The chosen topic dealt with harmony and world peace, visible in the links and joints among the thirty figures covering like in a puzzle the 180 squared meters of the mural. Every character shows a specific aspect of a peaceful world: humanized scissors represent the actual cooperation among men to defeat the snake, i.e., the evil, which was already eating the head of the nearby figure, the woman with the baby recalls maternity, the two men supporting the dolphin recall the relationship with nature. Differently from usual, Haring chooses less vivid colors, matching the tones of the city and of the palaces therein. Tuttomondo indeed is the only work by Haring conceived as permanent from the beginning, not fleeting and destined to disappear with use or in the routine of mass communication. In the week during which the mural was painted, a real show was going on thanks to the curious citizens, the enthusiast children and young people, the friars who found in this art a glimpse toward the Heaven. Tuttomondo is also the last public project by Haring: the artist died eight months later, on Feb. 16, 1990, at the young age of 31, due to AIDS complications.
The experience in Pisa impressed Haring. Like a final parting, he wrote in his diary: «I look at the top of the bell tower, it is really so beautiful here. If the Heaven exists, I do hope it resembles this place».
CACHE HUNT
It is a multicache for two reasons: let you carefully admire Tuttomondo, and slightly reduce the risk of mugglers: many of them stay in front of the mural for hours. It is a micro containing only the logbook: remember to bring a pen!
In order to compute the cache location you have to retrieve some values by looking at Tuttomondo. In the mural a number of two digits is painted:
A = first digit of the number
B = second digit of the number
Close to the number, there is also a circled algebraic symbol: if the circled symbol is +, then C=9, if the circled symbol is -, then C=8.
