Welcome to Winter
Wonderland
(OK,
so you wont see this, but it gives you an idea!)
The cache is not at the published coordinates.
This cache takes you up to the waterfalls in Nursery ravine. The
best time to do the cache is one of those warm cloudless winters
days, after a bit of rain. Then you will see the wonderland in all
its glory. Those days seldom fall on week ends, or fit in with our
plans though! Nevertheless, it will always be a pleasant forest
walk at any time of year. Take drinking water in summer.
The GPSr conditions for acquiring coordinates are terrible! The
locations are deep in a ravine, with dense tree cover! Use you GPSr
as a rough guide, but the clue locations are fairly obvious when
you get there.
To find the cache start at the listed coordinates:
Clue 1:
S 33° 59.167 E
018°25.231
While catching you breath, look at the sign on the tree. (The
one that makes you think of spears, …or donkeys) Remember to
photograph the sign for later checking. You don't want to have to
climb back up here!
(A)
- Under the Latin name of the tree are three common names.
What is the second
last letter of the bottom word (looks Xhosa to me)? What
is it's numerical value in the alphabet (if A=1 B=2 C=3 etc)?
- Let the numerical value of the letter be (A).
(A) = ?
(B)
- There is a number in the bottom right of the sign
- What is the third (or last) digit?
- Let the value of the last digit be (B).
(B) = ?
(C)
- What is the first digit of the number?
- Let the value of the first digit be (C).
(C) = ?
Clue 2:
S 33° 59.186 E
018°25.(A)(C)(B)
(D)
- This is a great spot to rest and take in the surroundings.
Spectacular in winter.
- "E.P" had a "not such an environmentally friendly moment" and
inscribed a date under his/her initials.
- (Take another photo)
- Do simple addition of all, individual numbers in the date to
find (D)
- (for example: if the date was 2006-04-04, then 2+0+0+6+0+4+0+4
= 16)
(D) = ?
Clue 3:
S 33° 59.19(C) E
018°25.(A)(C)(7)
(E)
- Walk off the corner in the path. Stand in the middle of the
stream. Look up and enjoy the view. Not impressed....see it after
rain!
- There is a tree a meter or two away, on the river bank, on your
right. Just higher upstream (about 1m upstream) is a tree with big
base and a trunks coming out of the big base. Most of the trunks
end as stumps about 1m long. One is alive and growing into a full
trunk.
- What is the TOTAL number of trunks arising from the big base
(alive and stumps)?
- Let the total number be (E)
E = ?
