Geocache Description:

A walk around Russell's Heritage Trail #1 which should take about 3/4 an hour. Do allow extra time to enjoy some of the attractions along the way & to solve final coordinates & find the cache. Cache is a napisan container with note, log book, pen & trinkets.

Final/GZ : South 35° 15.ABC ' East 174° 07.DEF ' Russell Museum S35° 15.797' E174° 07.355' a good starting place, though you can go in any order you like... Entry is not necessary to complete the cache, though you may find the displays & videos interesting and the gift shop has a good selection of books as well as a booklet which includes all 4 Russell Heritage Trails (all entirely optional) The museum is open every day except Christmas Day. January:10am - 5pm February - December: 10am - 4pm Admission:Adults - $7.50 Children - $2.00 Family rate - $7.50 per Adult and children free ** A ** & ** B ** Crane S35° 15.795' E174° 07.320' Around the back of the museum you will find several interesting displays and artifacts from whaling days... The old crane was originally on Stephenson's jetty from 1866 it was later transferred to the present wharf to unload coastal shipping. After 1930 it was lengthened for weighing gamefish. The cannon was set up with two others on Tapper's Mount at the north end if Russell beach to defend the town before Heke's last attack. It was last fired when placed on it's present site (1917) ** C ** Cenotaph S35° 15.767' E174° 07.323' The Russell Returned Services Association erected this monument in 2000 to remember the Russell citizens who served in conflicts overseas Subtract the # of Hakaraias who served in WW1from the total number of Russell soldiers who served in WW1= C Public Toilets S35° 15.753' E174° 07.337' ** D ** The Gables S35° 15.747' E174° 07.297' A building has stood on this site since the late 1830's and rebuilt after the sacking of ____. It has had a variety of uses, including bakehouse, private residence, Salvation Army boy's home, hotel and restaurant. When was it rebuilt? _ _ _ _ Divide the second digit by the third digit = D Swordfish Club and Russell General Store S35° 15.720' E174° 07.289' The 1st record of a swordfish landed in the Bay of Islands was in 1913. World famous author & angler Zane Grey brought publicity & growth to the club which had it's 75th Jubilee in 1999. The General Store was built in 1880 and was originally the site of the harbourmaster's residence & office. Steamers tied up here to bring in supplies, before road access to town. Even today, most visitors arrive via passenger ferry than by road. Duke of Marlborough S35° 15.680' E174° 07.274' "The Duke" holds NZ's oldest pub license, dated July 1840. The present building was shifted here in 1931 from Cable Bay near Mangonui, where it had been part of the Cable Station that linked NZ to Australia. Custom House S35° 15.660' E174° 07.270' An example of Victorian Gothic, built in 1870. These days it is used as a police station. The large Moreton Bay fig tree was planted by Edward Binney Laing around 1870; it was badly scorched in 1931 when the 3rd "Duke" burnt down. ** E ** Fish factory, Cavalli and Russell Houses S35° 15.570' E174° 07.251' In the1880's Masefield Bros. bought land here and built homes, a wharf and a fish canning factory which worked successfully for 17 years. The factory and wharf have gone, but the 2 houses remain. Cavalli House was built circa 188_? the last digit = E made this easy in case you stopped for beer @ The Duke Baker's House S35° 15.573' E174° 07.287' Built in the 1880s for Ernest Ford, merchant and son of NZ's 1st surgeon, Dr. Samuel Ford. Home to generations of the Baker family for more than a century. Immigrant Cottage S35° 15.596' E174° 07.297' The last of 5 government cottages erected in 1875; This one was occupied by the signalman at the Flagstaff. ** D ** ( alternate/re-check) Russell Baptist Church (was the Methodist Church) S35° 15.591' E174° 07.310' Wesleyan missionaries held services in town from the earliest days of European settlement... but when was this church built? Subtract 3rd digit from 4th= D Russell School S35° 15.720' E174° 07.398' There are original parts of the school that date back to 1892, though formal education began much earlier at the Pompallier Catholic Mission in 1839. ** F ** Christ Church S35° 15.795' E174° 07.385' Here you will find the oldest existing church in NZ. It's chequered history is shown by the musketball holes, old graveyard, stained glass windows and tapestry cushions. Do have a wander & closer look! When was the church established? _ _ _ _ 3rd digit = F Haratu Marae (Formerly the DOC Office) S35° 15.813' E174° 07.318' Russell's Post Office and Courthouse were previously on this site (1875-1969) Pompallier House S35° 15.848' E174° 07.302' This rammed earth building (pisé de terre) was built in 1842 and was used as a printery by the Marist brothers at this Roman Catholic mission. It is now in the care of the NZ Historic Places Trust. They are open for tours, December-April: daily 10am - 5pm May-November: daily 10am -4pm Admission Charges: Adult: $7.50 Student: $3.50 Child: Free
