Dans
cet îlot verdoyant, vous pourrez découvrir une
stèle "khatchkar" (croix/pierre, en arménien) en pierre rose,
symbole arménien dont les premiers exemplaires remontent au IXème
siècle. Erigés pour des raisons votives, les khatchkars
expriment plus volontiers le salut de l'âme, qu'elle soit pour un
individu en vie ou décédé. Mais ils peuvent être érigés pour des
commémorations militaires, des constructions d'églises ou pour se
protéger des calamités naturelles..
Dans le cas présent, le khatchkar a été consacré à la mémoire du
1,5 million d'Arméniens victimes des violences perpétrées par
l'empire ottoman en 1915.

this place, one can discover a khachkar (meaning cross-stone) which
is a cross-bearing carved memorial stele covered with rosettes and
botanical motifs, characteristic of Armenian art. The erection of a
khachkar was for votive reasons, i.e. for the salvation of the soul
of either a living or a deceased person. The khachkar may be
erected also to commemorate a military victory, construction of a
church, or as a form of protection from natural disasters.
The present khachkar was dedicated to the memory of the 1.5 million
Armenians victims of the violence of the Ottoman empire in
1915.
