Geocache Description:

A well cleaned and camoed peanut butter jar.

We have driven past this cairn many times over the years and never stopped to see why it was placed. Today after work I decided to stop and read the inscription, and then decided a cache should be placed to mark the beginning (or terminus if coming from BC) of the Northern Woods and Water Route.

The Northern Woods and Water Route was conceptualized as a highway route that would connect northern towns through the western provinces. It was hoped this would lead to an increase in tourism in the north, and along with it an upgrading of the highways. The 2,400 km route was designated in 1974, and in 1980 this monument was placed to officially open the route. The highway travels northwest from here through Dauphin, and on to The Pas. It then takes a more westerly route across Saskatchewan and Alberta to Dawson Creek BC. You can learn more about it at (visit link)

The cache contains a logbook and pencil, a few trade items, a TB, and of course an FTF certificate. Enjoy the cache and the highway, buckle up, put your kids in car seats or booster seats, and don't drink and drive (Tim Horton's not withstanding).
