On January 1st, 1883, a post office was opened and named KINISTENO; four years later the spelling was officially changed to Kinistino. In 1905, when the new village was established on the railway, the same name was given to it.
"Kinistino" is one of over eighty variant spellings of "Kenisteno," a name of unknown meaning, which a group of Crees applied to themselves. The word first appears in the Jesuit Relation of 1658 in the form of "kilistilon." The early jesuits kenow nothing of the country west of the Great Lakes; Kilistilon to them was a vague people living apparently north of Lake Huron. The French corruption of "Kenisteno" into "Kristineau" led to its further alteration by abbreviation into "Cree," the name now applied to a large number of sub-tribes, including the original "Kenisteno." The name was apparently later applied to the Swampy Cree, or Maskegan, living between Lake Winnipeg, Lake of the Woods, and the north shore of Hudson's Bay. In Dr. Jenness's Indians of Canada, 1st edition, page 283, the following appears: "Cree: contraction of Kristineaux, the French forn of a name, of unknown meaning, that a portion of the tribe applied to itself." Some of the variant spellings are: Cristineau, Kristineaux, Kilisteno, Kristeno, Kinishtino, Kyristinons, Kinistinon, Kries..."
Some have suggested that the word "Kinistino" is equivalent to "Running Water" in Cree. This has not been able to be verified.
