Can you see it? (Dolebury Warren) Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Paradiddle: Sorry to all people watching this cache, but I have decided to archive this one as I don't have the time at the moment to remake the equipment needed to get it back up and running.

Thanks to everyone who did manage to do this one while it was active, and I hope you enjoyed it.

Geocache Description:

UPDATE 22nd AUGUST 2010
This has been on premium membership for nearly a year, so time to open it up to all....

This is puzzle cache that was originally set for an 'Introduction to Geocaching' walk held as part of the Mendip Hills walking festival in September 2009.

Dolebury Warren is an SSSI (English Nature) and scheduled ancient monument (English Heritage). The site is owned by the National Trust and managed by Avon Wildlife Trust, both of which have kindly given permission for this cache. While searching for this cache, please take due care and consideration to minimise any impact on the local environment, wildlife and grazing farm animals. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times.
The remains of a rectangular iron age fort (Dolebury Camp) can still be seen, and the summit commands excellent views of the surrounding countryside. In addition to the prehistoric fortifications, the hillfort also contains a Medieval rabbit warren and possible Second World War features.

The cache is NOT at the headline coordinates (this is the summit, which is worthwhile visiting for the views), but somewhere else near by. You need to solve the puzzle below to reveal the starting coordinates at Stage 1.

Hidden in the autostereogram (magic eye) picture below are two words that Geocachers should be familiar with. Can you see them?

A=2 : B=9 : C=5 : D=6 : E=0 : F=3 : G=6 : H=5 : I=0 : J=6 : K=3 : L=1 : M=5
N=1 : O=1 : P=1 : Q=4: R=9 : S=3 : T=9 : U=2 : V=7 : W=5 : X=6 : Y=1 : Z=3

Reading left to right, write the words you see in the picture into the table below. Now convert the letters to number values using the list of letter to number substitutions given above. Use these letters and numbers to determine the coordinates for the next puzzle.

Letters 1-6

Numeric value

Checksum of values for letters 1 to 6 = 26

What now?

Go to N 51 19.Letter1 Letter2 Letter3   W 002 46.Letter4 Letter5 Letter6

Here you have to find a long camouflaged object that contains a 6 letter code word. Can you see it? Look for something else nearby to help you.

Please note you do not need to dismantle anything you may find here to solve the puzzle.

Once you know the word, and reading top to bottom, substitute each letter in the word for a number (as given above) to find the cache.

Parking
Dolebury Warren can be approached from various directions. There is a small car park at the end of single track road (dead-end) at Dolebury Bottom (Waypoint 1) with enough space for 2 or 3 cars. Go up the steps then follow footpaths to the summit.
For a longer walk, alternative parking can be found at The Swan Inn at Rowberrow (Waypoint 2) or next to the Burrington Inn in Burrington Combe (Waypoint 3). You might want to consult a map to find footpaths leading to Dolebury Warren from these locations.

Thanks
We would like to thank the National Trust and Avon Wildlife Trust for granting permission to place this cache at Dolebury Warren.
