In 1844 Father Comte and French priest of the society of Mary established a mission station at Pukekaraka just outside Otaki and baptised about 500 Maori. In 1854 Father Comte returned to France and for the next 20 years or so the Catholic Maori along the Kapiti Coast received only sporadic visit from itinerant missionary priest. In 1885 Father Francoif Melu was stationed in Otaki and soon the Maori people of Ohau - Manakau - Waikawa asked for their own church. St Stephens Church became the first to be built on the Manawatu Railway Company Line.
