Geocache Description:

AMTG #13

Another cemetery hide.

The cache is hidden outside the cemetery but very close by.

Bring your respect and a desire to learn. This is the resting spot of Mr. Bo Diddley

Born Ellas Otha Bates, 12/30/1928, he was raised by his aunt Gussie McDaniel and changed his last name in 1934.

He worked as a carpenter and mechanic, studied violin and performed at the age of 18. He may have gotten his name from his golden gloves activities or the instrument called the diddley bow.

He appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, played with the Grateful Dead and The Rolling Stones. He spent two and a half years as Dept. Sherriff in Valences Co. where he purchased three needed patrol and pursuit vehicles for the department.

He received an honorary degree from the U of FL in August of 2008. Gainesville was a place where he often helped many folks in need. He was quiet and never bragged about his acts of kindness, charity and goodwill.

His home was near Archer Florida where he died of heart failure. His last words were “Wow, I’m Going to Heaven”.

I have just heard that his guitar is part of the newly opened AA Smithsonian Museum in Washington. His grandson cried when he saw it. 'Nuff said.

If you take a picture of yourself at the memorial you can log this cache a second time. There is another memorial to a young man in the same cemetery and you can submit that one instead if you choose (see the pictures for the second memorial...he should not be forgotten).

Due to the litter this is NOT a kid friendly cache!!

Super Congrats to mvb for the FTF and for taking the time to see the memorials. His comments and photos are why I put my AMTG caches out. Thanks as always mvb!
