Ngaambul: As there's been no cache to find or log to sign for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the near future (next 30 days), just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

A charming ground in Sydney's inner western suburbs the historic Petersham Oval is home to winter and summer sporting teams.

In the summer, Petersham-Marrickville Cricket Club (now Randwick-Petersham) occupy the grounds and in the winter Petersham-Leichhardt Baseball Club (c 1900) and Marrickville District Baseball Club (c 1921).

Petersham Oval was the scene of eighteen year-old Don Bradman's first appearance in grade cricket in December 1926, scoring 110 on debut for St George. A stone plaque commemorating this achievement is located at the entrance to the oval.

However, its baseball that holds a truly memorable hold on this oval. Many cricketers played baseball as their winter sport – the Chappell and Border brothers are just two examples.

Baseball eventually became a summer sport in the late 1940’s, but the true aura of Australian baseball is the winter game.

Petersham or Petes as they are called were originally established in 1900 and continue to be a leading force in Sydney baseball. The oval has seen much in its history including games against US Armed Forces on their way to Japan in the 1940’s and later in the 50’s.

The oval has held Claxton Shield battles, International games including Australian games in the lead to the Olympics in 1956. It has been said that over well over 1,000 would attend these games and the grandstand built in 1924 would be pack to the rafters.

This oval holds some truly remarkable history and for me personally some wonderful days and many friends.

It is a great place to come with the family enjoy some sport, walk with the dog, run in the playground or just soak up some history.

Cache may be difficult to retrieve on weekend game days. It is small but holds a notepad and room for travel coins.
