The word Langdon goes back to old English, meaning long hill. In the first reference in 861 there was one Langandune, but in 1291 there was a reference to Westlangdone, the current West Langdon being about a mile to the North West.
St Augustine's church seems to be of Norman style of early English churches. It is nestled away almost out of sight from the road through the village. In the middle ages the area around Langdon was run by the ST Augustine's Brotherhood from the nearby West Langdon Abbey (now on private property) Founded in 1192 and was said to have been the first religious building to have been dissolved by King Henry V111. The lands were sold off by the King and acquired by the Masters family who went on to build on the site of the abbey. In my experience this church is one of the increasing number of local churches to be found locked during the day.
Parking is safest at N51 09.980,E00120.168, with just a short walk to the cache, which is outside the churchyard.
