This cache has been archived.

Skookum Bear: As the cache owner has not indicated that they have visited the cache location to replace it if it was missing, perform needed maintenance, or verify that it is still there within a reasonable amount of time, I am regretfully archiving the cache to clear it from the active cache database and open the area to new caching opportunities. If the cache owner would like to replace a cache at this location, please submit a new geocache listing and it will be reviewed under the current Geocaching guidelines.

Please do not respond to this note by sending an email reply - your response will go to an unmonitored location and disappear into the ether instead of being sent to me. If you need to contact me regarding this cache, please do so using the link on my Profile Page

Geocache Description:

Martha's Mounds are rocky knobs, excellent viewpoints looking east and south on Mt Work in Gowlland Tod Park. Get there off the main Mt Work trail below the summit and raven ridges on the south end on a vague unmarked trail leads to the east about 180 m to a series of rocky outcrops, Martha's Mounds. Approximate elevations 150 m north parking lot, 446 m summit, 390 at the junction and 400 m cache.

When the Outdoor Club of Victoria hikes Mt Work, they often include Martha's Mounds. They rate this hike as b2B. The viewpoint is named after Martha,a pioneering, long time OCV member, as a memorial, at her favourite viewpoint on the mountain.

Martha's Mound is actually quite a bit farther down from the bump at the geocache site. It is the rocky knoll at 48°31.463 N,123°28.516 W. I hiked with the OCV on 4 July 2010 and was shown the memorial plage but its location near this knoll remains undisclosed.

The cache is a 1 litre L-N-L. A Shephrds Watch "Aquitaine Ring Sundial' is the prize for the FTF

A recent unofficial trail marked with carins, flags and a lightly worn boot track descends from Martha's Mounds to the Hartand Bike Trail coming in just south of the South Ridge "skinny". No bushwacking is involved except to duck under one large tree down across the Martha Mounds traill. Routefinding but no real bushwacking is necessary on the unofficial new descent route. It loops around in the lower section as it was set by mountain bikers. These bike trails offer an optional return loop for experienced off trail hikers. Buy the map for the confusing Hartland bike trails .
