It is one of the oldest cultural institution in the county. To this end, the Society's mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the artifacts, archives and bibliographic materials of the social, cultural and economic history of Lackawanna County and Northeastern Pennsylvania. To further its mission, the Society's specific responsibilities include the following: fostering the knowledge and appreciation of the history and culture of Lackawanna County and associated areas through educational programs, public accessibility to library materials and artifact/archive collections, and alliances with like-minded organizations, and to encourage an appreciation of the wider history and culture of the United States by relating the regional experience to that of the nation through programs and activities. Through the support of its members and such organizations as the PHMC and the Lackawanna County, the Society has accomplished this goal through collecting significant published works, manuscripts, maps and atlases, documents, and artifacts capturing the area's rich and historical resources. Since 1942, the Society has operated from its present location, the Catlin House, built in 1912, in the city of Scranton. Once the sixteen-room residence of George H. Catlin, an early financier in the city, and his wife Helen, the home now serves as the organization's headquarters - accommodating exhibits, lectures, and research activities.
