In der Zeit des Keupers (vor etwa 230 bis 200 Millionen Jahren) lag das heutige Süddeutschland im Randbereich eines flachen Meeres, in dem abwechselnd Tone und Sande abgesetzt wurden. Die Küstenlinie änderte sich dabei ständig und zeitweise wurde das Becken vom Weltmeer abgeschnitten und trocknete aus. Durch die Eindampfung des Meerwassers entstanden Gips- und Steinsalzablagerungen. Viele dieser Gesteine sind sehr verwitterungsanfällig und wurden daher namensgebend für den Keuper, denn so bezeichnet man im Fränkischen weiche, bröckelig zerfallende Schichten. Am Schwanberg ist diese aus mehreren kleineren Abstufungen bestehende "Keuper-Schichtstufe" besonders eindrucksvoll entwickelt. Genauere Details stehen auf der Infotafel die man an den oben angegebenen Koordinaten findet.

English:

The Keuper is a lithostratigraphic unit, which can be seen very well at the Schwanberg. Approximately 230 to 200 million years ago, Southern Germany was a border area of a shallow sea, where alternately tone and sand were sedimented. The coastline was constantly changing and sometimes the basin was cut off from the ocean and dried out. The evaporation of ocean water caused gypsum and rock salt deposits. More precise details are available on the information board at the coordinates given above.
