Geocache Description:

Easily accessible at the eastern end of New Providence beside the main road - The East End Light is a pink building set beside the road in a newly landscaped area with table and benches. Parking available. Buses are infrequent so do not rely on a bus.
Traffic going east from Nassau in the afternoon is very heavy so visiting this cache in the morning is preferable.

Congratulations to dmdforme on being FTF on 16 September 2009 - His description of his journey to the cache is well worth reading and thanks dmdforme for adding the photographs.

Small cache stone - but think bigger. Has started with a mini-log & pencil, Bahamian coins. Will have a TB as well.

Note for Visitors to the island of New Providence: This cache is on the coastal road. From downtown Nassau head east along East Bay Street and Eastern Road. The cache is 9 km (5.59 mi) from the bridge that comes from Paradise Island and the route takes you through an older residential part of New Providence. There is a little Convenience Store at 25º 03.267N 077º 17.397W otherwise you will be passing only houses and gardens but you will have frequent seaviews. Do not be confused by the Lighthouse Folly en route – check your GPS.

Traffic heading east along this route is very heavy in the afternoons/evenings so therefore journey at these times not recommended for anyone with deadlines such as departure of a cruiseship! Bus service is infrequent so not recommended.

The cache is placed with permission of the Port Director and the site has recently been landscaped by the Nassau Garden Club which is also compiling a History of the East End Light. It is understood that the East End Light was erected at the beginning of the last century to assist those in sloops coming from the southeast part of the country such as Exuma, Long Island, Eleuthera and Cat Island, into Nassau to attend Baptist conferences

The Mary Moseley’s Bahamas Handbook published in 1926, under the heading ‘Colonial Lights’, indicates that the East End Light consisted of a ship’s masthead lantern fixed on the peak of the roof of a stone building. It gave a fixed red light and was visible all round except where obscured by high lands of New Providence. It is elevated 57 feet above high water mark and is visible for a distance of 8 miles. The light, now solar-powered, is still in use and is maintained by the Port Department.
