Geocache Description:

Water’s Edge

An easily accessible cache on one of the lesser-known, most sheltered and secluded Simon’s Town beaches in Seaforth suburb just south of the town centre

A great place to spend a few (or more!) tranquil minutes watching the waves and admiring the superb views across False Bay to the Tygerberg Hills in the north and the Helderberg Mountains in the east.

The cache is a replacement for the 1st cache at this location which became permanently embedded in its hiding place which was cemented over!

Water’s Edge (apostrophe optional) is the name of the beach and also of the old house on the corner. According to info found on the web . . .

. . . this house (now a guest house) has been a beach house belonging to the same family since it was built in the late 1800s. The original cottage was renovated in 1910. During the Boer War, Boer prisoners were held in a camp above the town and it was not unusual to find British Army soldiers knocking on the door asking to look for escapees under the beds! In the early years, the large green field attached to the house housed a cow to serve the family with fresh milk.

As there is now no public parking along the access road to the house, most of those who visit the beach are residents living in the area.

Water’s Edge beach is a child-friendly beach, set in a cove full of interesting climbing rocks from which to fish for Klipvis, Strepies and Hottentots. At the end of the beach is the perfect tidal paddling pool for infants. The sea itself is protected from strong currents because it is situated behind a large rocky bluff. A short walk from the beach is Boulders Beach Penguin Reserve . . .

To reach the cache location there are two approaches:

1)     Park at the main Seaforth Road car park above the Seaforth restaurant at S 34 11.697 E 18 26.806 - this can become rather busy (and often full) during the main tourist/holiday seasons. Walk down past the restaurant to Seaforth Beach then turn south and walk along the beach to Water’s Edge beach.

2)    Park on Gay Rd at or near S 34 11.748 E 18 26.862. Walk to the start of a small alley running down to the beach at S 34 11.759 E 18 26.893. Follow this down, crossing Klein Tuin Road to the upper wooden gate (@ S 34 11.724 E 18 26.918) and then lower gates access to Water’s Edge beach.

The cache, a small snap-top camo-taped tablet pot, is hidden in an old tree stump just to the right of the path as you approach the small lower gate accessing the beach. Kindly replace the cache carefully & properly concealed.

This is high muggle-factor zone (although most tourists pass by on the road above going to and from Boulders blithely unaware of its existence) so you will need to time your interventions carefully to avoid unwanted curiosity . . .
