This Earthcache deals with the Raibl Beds (in German: „Raibler Schichten“).
What are the Raibl Beds: Rock formations dating back to the late Triassic
When and how were the Raibl Beds formed: During the Carnian Age (named after the Carnic Alps, first age of the late Triassic). The layers were formed by different types of sediments.
Alternating marine recessions and floodings caused a complex succession of formations: Shallow areas of the ocean filled up with sediments. As these areas got shallower salinity increased. Lime and dolomite (with inclusions of salt and gypsum) were formed. Such periods alternated with periods of a rapid rise of sea level.
Typical for the Raibl Beds: A great variety of sediments, multiple change between lime, dolomite, marl and clastic sediments (such as slate or sandstone), in addition evaporita and greywacke.
Raibl Beds erode easily.
Some types of Raibl Beds are water confining, this often results in spring lines alonge these layers.
Reference locality: In Italy in the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Raibl Beds found in the southern alps differ from those in the northern alps.
Where do Raibl Beds occur:
Southern limestone alps: Great span of thickness. The Raibl Beds of the Drave range consist of an alternating series of three carbonatic and three clastic horizons. Along the Gail Valley (Carinthia) Raibl Beds contain deposits of lead and zinc.
Central Alps (in the mesozoic sediments) . Thickness varies from 10 meters in the Tyrolean Alps (Kalkkögel near Innsbruck) to approximately 300 up to 400 meters in Switzerland (in the area of Landwasser-Ducan) .
Northern limestone alps: In the Wetterstein range Raibl Beds have a thickness of 400 meters. Equivalents to marine Raibl Beds are also found in eastern Austria (higher regions fo Rax and Schneeberg). The Lunzer Beds consist of a more terrigenous type of sediment (slate) at their base. The Lunzer Beds also contain sandstone and coal seams (abundant enough for coalmining in earlier times).
Raibl-Beds do not occur in the area between Bad Ischl and Bad Aussee (Salzkammergut). This area (called Hallstatt-zone) was a deep ocean basin at the time the Raibl Beds were formed.
