A quick grab with a nice view. Micro placed in view of an old dam in Saranac.
This cache is placed in view of an old dam on the south side of Saranac. I am told a mill once stood near here.
Saranac developed in the early 1840's and the village incorporated in 1869.
Saranac was preceded by Waterville just a few miles to the south. Waterville, however orginated on the Grand River Turnpike (Old 16?) in the 1830's. This being a time when river steamers and railroads were becoming the popular means of transport for goods.
With river steamers on the Grand River, and the Detroit and Milwaukee Railroad along it's banks, it's been said that Saranac just couldn't help itself. Saranac blossomed while Waterville faded away.
In 1872, John Dillenback wrote of Saranac in The History and Directory of Ionia County:
"It contains two flouring-mills, one propelled by water-power alone, and the other using both steam and water; one stave-factory, doing a large business; one steam saw-mill, in connection with which is an establishment for the manufacture of oars upon an extensive scale ; a furnace and machine shop for manufacturing agricultural implements; two wagon and carriage shops; one pump-factory. There are two large warehouses for receiving and shipping produce, two hotels, five dry-goods stores, two drug stores, two hardware stores, two furniture stores, eight grocery stores, several boot and shoe establishments, and a large establishment for the manufacture of wagon hubs."
Cache Notes:
This cache is on private property with the enthusiastic permission of the owner. The dam itself is on another lot for which I am still seeking permission for cacher access. Please respect the dam owner's boundaries.
This is a micro - please bring your own writing utensil.
