Geocache Description:

This cache is a small camo covered metal box. It contains a log only. To begin, it contains a Sacajawa $1.00 gold coin for the FTF. It also contains a Bushwhacker Museum magnet.
Permission has been obtained from Missouri Parks to place this cache.

Both of Vernon County's major Civil War battles - one at the beginning, the other near the end - took place in the Deerfield area, the location of the only improved ford over the Marmaton River.
On Sept, 2, 1861, on their way north after their victory at Wilson's Creek, Gen. Sterling Prices pro-confederate 12,000-man Missouri State Guard confronted Kansas Jayhawkers over Big Drywood Creek, a little over a mile south of here.
On Oct. 25, 1864, retreating from his great raid, Gen. Prices 10,000-man army was shattered at Mine Creek in Kansas and fought a running battle southeast to the Douglass Ford (barely half a mile due north). Gen. Jo Shelby staved off defeat, even though many of his men were actually unarmed! This action takes its name from nearby Charlot Creek (corrupted to the modern Shiloh.
Please take the time to read the entire story of the battles and participants. Also, feel free to visit the Bushwhacker Mueseum in Nevada to learn more about the Civil War on the Missouri-Kansas border. The "Bushwhacker Jail" geocache is located near the museum.
Happy Geocaching!!!
