ENJOY,ENJOY!!! - ENJOY, ENJOY!!! - ENJOY, ENJOY!!! - ENJOY, ENJOY!!! - ENJOY, ENJOY!!!

Manny Gordon, the retired Lackawanna County district forester famous for his urging to "Enjoy, enjoy" Northeast Pennsylvania's great outdoors, passed away on July 23, 2009 at the age of 97. He will always be remembered by his many friends for his unfailing cheerfulness, his sense of humor and his enduring love of nature.

Mr. Gordon, who attended Penn State from 1931 to 1935, was one of the university's oldest living alumni. After graduation, he went to work for the state Bureau of Forestry, where he was in charge of 1.2 million acres of forest in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties. His duties included supervision of conservation, fire prevention, fire control, tree planting and public relations. Other accomplishments that Manny was proud of included his work with the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, and his command of prisoner of war forestry camps in Europe during World War II.

Mr. Gordon's catchphrase, "Enjoy, enjoy," was born one day when he was making a short trip to Wysox to deliver a speech. Mr. Gordon was driving along Route 6 and stopped at a lookout point in Wyalusing, Bradford County. As he stood on rocks high above the Susquehanna River he exclaimed, "You can really enjoy, enjoy this view." He got so excited he repeated the word twice.

Most of us fondly recall Manny and his unique and energetic directive to "ENJOY, ENJOY the Great Outdoors". This call to nature still rings true in the minds of many residents of Northeast Pennsylvania, and there is no doubt this is a sentiment that geocachers in particular embrace in the pursuit of their hobby. With this in mind, the members of NEPAG (Northeast Pennsylvania Geocachers) have created a series of geocaches in honor of Manny Gordon's lifetime of environmental awareness and protection by memorializing his legendary call to get out and ENJOY, ENJOY!!! the forests and woodlands of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
