De Hoge Mouw in Kasterlee is een van de vele
landduinen die je kan vinden tussen Herentals en Retie. Deze
landduinen zijn ontstaan tijdens de laatste ijstijd, tussen 2
miljoen en 10.000 jaar geleden. Felle noorderwinden bliezen heel
wat zand naar deze streek. Waar dit zand op een hoopje werd
geblazen, ontstonden duinen, ertussenin verzamelde zich het water
en kreeg je vennen en moerassen. Deze watergebieden zijn geliefde
broedplaatsen voor talrijke soorten watervogels. Het
landschapsbeeld wordt gedomineerd door uitgestrekte bossen. Verder
treffen we hier nog heidevelden aan, open stuifzanden, holle wegen,
waterlopen en loofbossen. Deze landschapelementen brengen
diversiteit in het gebied, waarmee de biologische rijkdom sterk
toeneemt. In dit bosgebied met zijn vele kleine wegen en paadjes
zijn niet alleen talrijke wandelingen bewegwijzerd, maar ook
mountainbike-routes en paden voor ruiterij. Het is een bezoekje
waard.

The Hoge Mouw in Kasterlee is one of the many continental dunes you
can find between Herentals and Retie. These continental dunes were
formed during the last ice age, between 2 million and 10,000 years
ago. Fierce north winds had blown lots of sand into the region. The
dunes formed where sand had been pilling up. Between the dunes,
accumulated water originated in fens and bogs. These wetlands are
popular breeding grounds for countless species of waterfowl. The
landscape is dominated by vast forests. Furthermore, there are
still fields of heather, open drifting sands, sunken roads,
waterways and deciduous forests. These landscape elements bring
diversity to the area, which greatly increases its biological
richness. In this forest with its many small roads and paths are
not only numerous signposted walks, but also mountain bike routes
and trails for horse riding. It is worth a visit.
