• THE PALLINUP RIVER: ( WA Sth Coast River Series). • The first ship known to visit this part of the Sth coast was the Dutch ship “Guilden Seepaart”, in 1627. One hundred and ninety five years later, it was the English Captain Matthew Flinders on HMS 'Investigator' who recorded the first sighting of the inland mountain range on 5 January 1802, which we call today The Stirling Ranges (North West of this Geo Cache). • The Pallinup begins it journey from just East of Broomhill approx 250 km away , meanders past the Stirling Ranges before it ends up in the Beaufort Inlet not far down stream . A large sand bar prevents it reaching the Great Southern Ocean except during major flood conditions which causes the sand bar to be breached. • The rivers name “Pallinup” is thought to have come from the local native words of Bollingup or Pollingup • The Word Pallinup is thought to mean “Place of Salty Water” , The Pallinup was salty even prior to clearing by Europeans. • One local: Charlie Hick can recall the last big flood in 1982. “I can remember that one very vividly because we actually went down to the Bridge and the water would have been maybe 18 inches from lapping the decking of the bridge. We went out into the middle of the bridge to have a little bit of a sticky beak and just at that moment a great big yate log or something came along and rammed into one of the pylons and the whole bridge sort of shook. Well I reckon I got off that bridge that fast it would have made Cathy Freeman look like she was walking backwards” .
