Geocache Description:

Introduction

The fourth of our Florence Nightingale Series - Florence and the Nightingale family had their summer home at Lea Hurst in Holloway.

The cache is a 5 minute walk from the road, down the farm track and through the buildings on very good surfaces.

The container is a 0.7litre sandwich box

Access

Vehicles can be considerately parked (ie on the public highway clear of the junction with the farm track - which has "private, no parking" signs - as this understandably annoys the residents) on the lane through Dethick. Please do not drive up the track up to the farms & church as this is private property.

A little history

There are three famous ladies associated with the parish of Dethick, Lea & Holloway including Florence Nightingale of course.

The second lady is the Alison Utterly, author of "Traveller in Time".

The main character of the book, Penelope, lives in the twentieth century, and it is only when she goes to live with her aunt at Thackers, a remote, ancient farmhouse, that she finds herself travelling back in time to join the lives of the Babington family, and watching helplessly as tragic events bring danger to her friends and the downfall of their heroine, Mary, Queen of Scots, whom they are seeking to rescue.

This is the famous Babington Plot, named after Anthony Babbingon of Manor Farm, Dethick, who plotted with Mary Queen of Scots imprisoned at nearby Wingfield Manor to assasinate Queen Elizabeth the First.

The third lady, and the inspiration for the cache name, is the Blue Peter dog "Goldie" who is buried in the grounds of Manor Farm next door to the cache site and whose owner is ex-Blue Peter presenter Simon Groom

There is quite a nice short video available at the Local BBC website HERE (Requires "realplayer")
