Sveti Ilija Mountain

Sveti Ilija (Saint Elias) is the highest summit on Peljesac, situated on western part of the peninsula, above the coastal town of Orebic. There is an old tradition of local people to climb Sveti Ilija Mountain which dates long before tourists arrived in these areas. There are couple of well marked (red-and-white marks) routes to climb Sveti Ilija - one from Viganj and another from Orebic - to reach the top of the mountain that is 961 meters high. Sveti Ilija is popular hikers and walkers destination.

The Track

The track from Viganj or Orebic takes approx. 3 hours of hiking (and little bit of climbing in the final phase) at a quick pace. The time to get back down is about the same. We strongly recommend not to walk during the summer sunny days as the track may get extremely exhausting! We experienced a track which we started at 3 AM in camp Perna near Orebic, then we watched an amazing panoramatic view and sunrise at Sveti Ilija and got back before the sun started to be hot. I and my friends really enjoyed this trip which enriched our stay by the sea! See some pictures below and where to start on the coast in the "START" waypoint.

The Cache

Since the cache was created kind of hurriedly during my vacation, it currently consists only of a 20 cm glass bottle, some papers for logging and a pen. However I believe this great piece of nature deserves a geocache. If you wish to replace the cache with a better container, I thank you in advance! Note: I am not Croatian so I am not able to fully maintain the cache during the year. If the cache got damaged and no local geocacher intends to help with maintenance, I would archive it.
