Geocache Description:

The cache is a small black round box, when placed contained a log pen and some small swaps, it is hidden with the kind permission of Alan McNair the farmer who’s land the old church is situated on .

From an extract in The history of the Diocese of Down and Connor there is a this small mention of the church "
'* the Churches of Austin's-town and of Adam Goiry.** The
first of these Churches was situated in Balljeaston, which is
a corruption of Ballyaustin — '* Austin's- town," so called he-
cause the church was dedicated to St Augustine, and was,
perhaps, an impropriation of some of the Angustinidn
monasteries. The ancient holy well still supplies the village
with excellent water. The other church of the Union was in
the ancient graveyard in the townland of Bally cor ; it measured
63 feet by 17. The graveyard is principally used by the
few Catholics who reside in the neighbouring civil parishes
Bally cor receives its name from the potpshaped holes which
are worn by the stream in its rocky bed near the mill ; the
word eairey signifies a cauldron, and enters into the com-
position of the names of many townlands.
and from
A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland (1837) by Samuel Lewis
BALLYCOR, a parish, in the barony of UPPER ANTRIM, county of ANTRIM, and province of ULSTER
BALLYCOR, a parish, in the barony of UPPER ANTRIM, county of ANTRIM, and province of ULSTER, 1 mile (N. by E.) from Ballyclare: the population is returned with the parish of Ballyeaston. This parish, which is situated on the road from Broughshane to Larne, and is bounded on the north and east by the Six-mile-water, comprises 7330 statute acres, according to the Ordnance survey. It is a rectory, in the diocese of Connor, and is partly one of the five parishes which constitute the union and corps of the prebend of Carncastle in the cathedral of Connor, and partly one of the two which form the perpetual curacy of Ballyeaston.

This is all the information that can be found about this church . What we see today is a rectangular enclosure and old graveyard with stones scattered about its uneven surface. Set centrally within it and aligned almost E/W is a footing for the old church measuring 60 x 28ft. Twenty four feet from the W end is a partition wall and the entrance appears to be on the W side of the partition wall in the S wall. The ruins stand to a height of 2-3ft. The E and W gables are c 4ft thick and the sidewalls 2ft thick.

The cache is situated in a Bush in the field were the ruin is situated The cache can be reach by parking at the mouth of the lane one car max and access is gain by walking up the lane at the side of the farm yard Though gates PLEASE ENSURE YOU CLOSE THE GATES BEHIND YOU AS YOU WALK UP THE LANE . The Terrain is a three due to the fact that the lane is mucky and there is slurry on it in places
