Many early settler in Tawa had being agricultural labourers and tradesmen who purchased forested land and clearing the bush to create farmland
Tawa sits aside the transport link between Porirua and Wellington Harbour. The improved railway lines now allows a 20 minute journey instead of more than 45 minutes in 1880's. The building of the motorway in the 1950's saw Tawa 20 minutes from Wellington too. Consequently Tawa population increase 12 fold in just 16 years
In 1945 Tawa had 598 residents and by 1961 because increase prosperity and improved transport link the population increase to 7204.
The building that you are standing next to is named after Mervyn Kemp who was the major of Tawa 1955 to 1983.
This is another good example of how a small community is celebrating its history and it's people.
