Prohibition of alcohol, often referred to simply as prohibition, refers to a sumptuary law which prohibits alcohol. Typically, the manufacture, transportation, import, exports, and sale of alcoholic beverages is restricted or illegal. The term can also apply to the periods in the histories of the countries during which the prohibition of alcohol was enforced. Use of the term as applicable to a historical period is typically applied to countries of European culture. In the early twentieth century, much of the impetus for the prohibition movement in the Nordic countries and North America came from Protestant wariness of alcohol.
Prohibition was made law when the United States Senate proposed the Eighteenth Amendment on December 18, 1917. Having been approved by 36 states, the 18th Amendment was ratified on January 16, 1919 and effected on January 16, 1920.
The "Volstead Act", the popular name for the National Prohibition Act, passed through Congress over President Woodrow Wilson's veto on October 28, 1919 and established the legal definition of intoxicating liquor. Though the Volstead Act prohibited the sale of alcohol, it did little to enforce the law. The illegal production and distribution of liquor, or bootlegging, became rampant, and the national government did not have the means or desire to enforce every border, lake, river, and speakeasy in America. By 1925 in New York City alone there were 30,000 to 100,000 speakeasy clubs.
Prohibition became increasingly unpopular during the Great Depression, especially in large cities. On March 23, 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt signed into law an amendment to the Volstead Act known as the Cullen-Harrison Act, allowing the manufacture and sale of certain kinds of alcoholic beverages.
On December 5, 1933, the ratification of the Twenty-first Amendment repealed the Eighteenth Amendment and thank goodness for the inebriated!
Now you can go about making, selling and drinking alcoholic beverages of you choice….all within limits. The hobby has grown to enormous proportions and can be a great source of enjoyment.
The cache that you seek is placed with permission of the shop owner. Please be very stealthy, as there are muggles everywhere! Some times of the day are busier than others. While here check out the hobby supplies and say “hi” to Cindy. She is the new owner of the shop and would like to help you out too. The cache is well concealed. Please hide it as well as you found it. Bring your own pen as the cache contains only a log sheet.
