Colorado Peak
This is a small peak in the Zuni Mountains comprised of pink granite. It is my first effort at hiding a cache. My son came along for technical support.
To get here, turn off Interstate 40 at exit 81 and go south on route 53. Take the first right at the Blue Spruce R V Park. (N 35 08.985, W 107 52.475) Follow Zuni Canyon (Mountain Road 49) road to the top of the canyon. (Along the way there are three caches that may catch your interest.) Watch for a right turn onto Mountain Road 480 (N 35 06.424, W 108 01.225) This road is a little rough in some spots, but family cars can travel here if going slow. Proceed up this road for a little over four miles until you see a wind mill and water tank on the right side of the road. (N 35 07.937, W 108 03.322)
You can park here or go up this small road a short distance to N 35 08.073, W 108 03.042. Either way, the cache is located about a half mile away. The elevation change is only 350 feet, but the pink granite is very loose in places. Strangely enough, going up is easier than coming down.
Near the top of the climb is a barb wire fence. The entire area is Cibola National Forest, but ranchers who lease the land put fences up contain their cattle. Don't hesitate to cross it!
This small mound of granite is 8,306 feet above sea level. The climb is tough, but the view is worth it.
The cache is a one pound plastic coffee can painted in camo colors. FTF gets a couple of "Drummer Boy" quarters. Log book, mech pencil and some trade items.
Enjoy the view.
