A small micro (you need a writing stick) that will take you off the beaten track. There is decent parking close to the cache and muggles should not be a problem.
This coal spraying operation on the westbound CP rail line is known as the Shuswap subdivision. CP works closely with it's coal customers to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of coal from the mines to the ports. They have a comprehensive program in place to manage these shipments, and regularly monitor the operations in this regard. Coal cars are sprayed at the mine site, and again en route to the Port of Vancouver, with a surfactant that creates a barrier coating, greatly reducing the potential for coal dust.
CP's estimated train frequency for this area is 28-33 freight trains per 24 hour period. The commodities carried by rail are the same as typically moved by truck, including such products as vehicle parts, lumber, ice cream and grain. Most items that are found in stores have at some point been shipped by rail.
There is no set schedule for any of these trains but, if you are fortunate, you might be there when one these very long coal trains goes by, and you will get to see the spraying system in operation.
The area adjacent to the tracks (typically 50' on either side of the track) is private property, so please respect same and enjoy the view from the side of the road.
