Geocache Description:

A quick drive by cache at a historic North Otago bridge.

The historic Waianakarua Bridge, which carries a class A Historic Places Trust classification, was recently preserved. The bridge, adjacent to the Mill House, was built in 1870 of Oamaru stone. The bridge was narrow, and had a relatively high accident record. An estimated $1 million was spent widening the carrigeway and preserving its engineering and historic significance. Whilst you have the opportunity to view this historic bridge you may find the cache, a 200ml container. BYOP. There is a good parking area to the east of the railway line about 100m down the coastal Waianakarua Rd. Turn off SH1 opposite the Mill House. It is suggested you walk from the park under the rail bridge to view the road bridge.
